Please join us this Friday, June 21st from 6-9 PM for the opening of new work by Lindey Carter and Randee Levine on our Main Floor, and Nel Ivancich in our Dibble Gallery.
Lindey Carter’s delicate watercolor landscapes are so simplified they verge on the abstract. As Carter puts it, “By studying the details of just one truth I am able to make sense of the chaos that surrounds me.” Her low horizons, and method of preparing each painting surface with thickly coated gesso is what sets her work apart. Gentle striations in the unsanded medium produce a textural background and moments of pause lie in the vertical crevices of intensified color. Like poetry, each diffused brush mark delicately informs a tranquil reverie of our big western skies and the long view of a vaguely familiar landscape. Carter received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Weber State University in 2004.
Randee Levine's work follows the abstract expressionist movement, allowing the laying down of one paint stroke to inform the next. Through this process of making gestures she responds viscerally to the language of each canvas. All the while a bit of her New York roots emanate in the form of bold color and gesture, and often text can found floating in and about the layers allowing the viewer to grasp fragments of thought, inspiring further contemplation. Deconstructed forms and lively gestures allow one to get lost in color, form, gesture and the symphony they create.
Levine earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from State University of New York at Purchase where she studied Color Theory with noted educator, fine art printer/publisher, and graduate of Black Mountain College, Sewell Sillman.
Nel Ivancich (1941-2014) was a high school student of Don Olsen (one of Utah’s pioneers of abstract expressionism). She studied at Harbor College and Chouinard’s (now CalArts) in Los Angeles during the 60’s and 70’s. In 1985-1988 she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the Fine Arts at the University of Utah under “the old guard”, professors such as Tony Smith, Sam Wilson, Bob Kleinschmidt, David Dornan, and Doug Snow. After which she stayed and taught there until ‘95, all the while delighting in friendships with fellow artists such as Lee Deffebach and Carolyn Coalson. In 2003 her works were selected for the Florence Biennale. While there, she founded Connecting-Art with 14 fellow artists from around the world, presenting works in a group exhibit Connecting People, Connecting Cultures at the United Nations in 2006. When she returned to California, it was to the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains where she painted in her garage enjoying the high desert surrounds, listening to the wind and the sound of raven’s wings flapping overhead. About her paintings she wrote: “Each is a response to the moment, the relentless wind stirring things up in my garage where I paint, the changing light coming through the door and window, the sound of birds having what seems to be serious dialog, or nothing more than the earlier layers of paint I’m about to add to. An ongoing intention is to mix chance and deliberation to achieve an appearance of effortlessness. I am energized by the challenge to join these fractured moments of time and layering into one painting.”
The exhibit will remain on display through July 12th. We hope to see you!
