When producer, DJ and performer Liliane Chlela moved from Lebanon to Canada in 2021, she was faced with a difficult choice: as an artist from the diaspora, she could 'symbolise' herself or 'assimilate'. She chose neither. The outcome of her choice was reflected in the project 'I, the hybrid and the antidote'. The world premiere of this project will take place during the prestigious Le Guess Who? (Utrecht) festival and will then travel straight to AB.
For this project, Chlela surrounded herself with an exquisite selection of great musicians. Think: Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Montreal) or ½ Jerusalem In My Heart, who mixes classical Arabic music with electronica. Also present: Egyptian producer/violinist Nancy Mounir, who totally took us by storm in '22 with her timeless debut 'Nozhet El Nofous' (read: 'a promenade of souls') where she 'mixed' historical recordings of popular Cairo singers from the 1920s with her own music. Also joins the ensemble: multi-instrumentalist/video artist and puppeteer Yara Asmar (Beirut) who recently released 'Synth Waltzes And Accordion Laments' to the world. This quartet will be joined by a classical string ensemble.
I, the hybrid and the antidote has been produced as part of Consortium Commissions, an initiative dedicated to spotlighting emerging artists from the Arab world, run by Mophradat.
