Title: Discrimination on Online Language Tutoring Platforms: Challenges and Responses.
Abstract:
This talk considers the various factors that influence teachers’ economic success on online tutoring platforms (OTPs). The talk argues that success on OTPs is determined by the intersection of language ideologies, technological affordances, and teachers’ individual self-branding strategies. The talk draws on analyses of teachers’ self-crafted profiles alongside interviews with teachers in the Philippines to examine various strategies that marginalized online teachers adopt in order to succeed. The talk concludes by discussing the role of OTPs in simultaneously challenging and reinforcing discrimination against marginalized English teachers.

Title: New frontiers in language and technology: A survey of future directions for applied linguists
Abstract:
I describe in this presentation the technological transformations that are incrementally, but radically, changing our everyday actions and practices. Such technologies include, but are not limited to, artificial intelligence and augmented reality. Despite the significance of these transformations, little discussion has taken place with regard to what applied linguists can do to contribute to an understanding of how these emergent technologies collectively transform human behaviour and communication. To this end, I identify key issues in language and technology, arguing that applied linguists are in an excellent position to contribute to such research. However, I argue that in order to make interdisciplinary and wider societal contributions, applied linguists must rethink how technologies can be harnessed to more efficiently publish and disseminate timely research.
