As part of its match on September 18, 2021 at Charlotte Memorial Stadium, USL Championship's Charlotte Independence Soccer Club is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Carolina Lightnin's 1981 American Soccer League Championship. Head Coach Rodney Marsh and 20 Lightnin' players will attend the match. There also will be a special tribute to Lightnin' founder and president, Robert "D" Bob Benson, who passed away earlier this year. North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame also will announce the newest inductees.
