About this Event
A source of beauty is now a source of light. Introducing a collection of lamps, pendants, and lighting—a new way to brighten up your home with Heath. Each piece is hand-thrown in the Clay Studio, and designed by Tung Chiang.
To celebrate the launch, we’re lighting up the Los Angeles showroom with a weekend of events, including bud vase workshops hosted by Tung and the Clay Studio team; a pop up of lighting design prototypes made throughout the exploration; and a meet and greet in the showroom gallery with Tung and the team.
Enjoy the rare opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind Heath Clay Studio prototypes at this exhibit, which will remain on display from August 3–August 10.
For this series, Heath Clay Studio director Tung Chiang drew inspiration from his childhood in Hong Kong—specifically, the memory of capturing fireflies and watching them shine through his fingers. This nostalgic effect is shines in the design of the new table lamps; when illuminated, a dappled pattern of light emerges around each lamp’s base.
The pendant and table lamps are glazed in a skillful gradient, which creates the illusion of light even when the lamps are off.
“The effect reminds me of my childhood; catching fireflies in my hands, then loosening my fingers to let their light shine through.”
Tung Chiang, Clay Studio Director
The Clay Studio began exploring ceramic lighting in 2015 as part of Heath’s third Design Series showcase. Ceramic is arguably an imperfect medium for lighting fixtures—it is heavy and opaque, not translucent. The team loved the challenge of pairing clay with light; since then, they’ve continued to explore illumination through ceramics. Ultimately, the merits of the medium outshone its limitations, and—true to Edith Heath’s ethos—the results were both beautiful and functional.
