This Flashback February, join two book authors and two editors who are creating a documentary archive and book, as they take us on their personal adventures in County marine history …
--- Historian and genealogist Dan Buchanan, who recently released the book, "A History of the Murray Canal"
--- Interviewers and editors Amy Bodman and Jane Macdonald, who are compiling South Shore Joint Initiative’s much-anticipated book, "A Lifetime Upon These Waters: An Illustrated Oral History of Prince Edward County’s Vibrant Commercial Fishery", which continues the late Suzanne Pasternak’s documentation of South Shore commercial fishing families
--- Historian and publisher Marc Seguin, author of the definitive book on County lighthouses, "For Want of a Lighthouse: Guiding Ships Through the Graveyard of Lake Ontario".
Water is a common thread for these researchers: Lake Ontario and its bays, which define most of the County’s boundary; and the dream and building of the Murray Canal to create a water highway across the isthmus. These authors and recorders of history will share their unique research paths in a talk and Q&A after each presentation. They will recount their challenges, changes in course, exciting discoveries, and generous help from local people along the way.
Richard Hughes, past president of the Hastings County Historical Society, will be our “navigator” for the talks, Q&As, and a lively panel discussion after the presentations.
Afterwards, mix and mingle with the presenters and enjoy refreshments. The authors’ books will be available for purchase.
This event is co-presented by the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, Prince Edward County branch (ACO PEC), and the South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI).
ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS EVENT WILL BE DONATED TO THE PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY ARCHIVES for the Historical Architectural Survey of Prince Edward (HASPE) Digitizing Project.
This project will digitize the HASPE Collection – the thousands of photographs and written records of heritage properties assembled by Tom Cruickshank in the early 1980s for the Historical Architectural Survey of Prince Edward, the foundational research for the 1984 book, The Settler’s Dream. Digitizing the HASPE Collection and putting it online will preserve the Collection and make it more accessible to the public.
