About this Event
Join us to celebrate International Science Centre and Science Museum Day, plus the 5th anniversary of Royal City Science, with very special guests Dr. Donna Strickland and Bob McDonald.
Dr. Donna Strickland, Nobel Laureate in Physics (2018) is only the 3rd woman in history to receive this most prestigious award, for her pioneering work in laser physics. Dr. Strickland grew up in Guelph and is a keen supporter of finding ways to give our youth more opportunities to explore and play in science, especially for girls and young women. She is also passionate about improving ways in which scientists talk about research and will share with us the important work she is spearheading at the University of Waterloo with the co-founding of the Trust in Research Undertaken in Science and Technology (TRuST) network in 2023.
Bob McDonald, one of Canada’s best-known science journalists, has been making science accessible to the public for more than 50 years. He is the host of CBC Radio’s award-winning science program, Quirks & Quarks, which has a national audience of nearly 500,000 people. McDonald is also a science correspondent for CBC Television’s The National; the Gemini-winning host and writer of the children’s series Head’s Up; and the host of The Great Canadian Invention, Wonderstruck, and the seven-part series, Water Under Fire. Bob is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and has received countless awards for his work. In 2014, asteroid 2006 XN67 was officially named “bobmcdonald” in his honour.
Two Canadian science icons. One shared passion. An incredible evening for all!
