LIFTER “Clasping Hands with the Moribund” “...wistful, melodic and joyfully unpredictable pop” Lo-fi indie folk group LIFTER are releasing their first album ‘Clasping Hands with the Moribund’ this October. Having released eight singles between 2021 and 2023, and later compiling them as mini-album Everything So Far in September last year, ‘Clasping Hands...’ marks an introduction to the various styles the band have strived to incorporate in their recent releases. With the lineup on the tracks consisting of the core duo of the group, with former Modern Rituals guitarist Harry Fanshawe and bassist and producer Miles Ward, the band were joined on the recording of these tracks byThe Death of Popco-leader Angus James, Swelt guitarist Chris Hicks, cellists Douglas Evans and Anna Strudwick, violinist Reuben Brunt, backing vocalist Olive Featherstone, cornet player Harry Furniss, and drummers Steven Fry and Oliver Cocup.
In this current incarnation, the band proudly take musical cues from a diverse range of sources including Nick Drake, Guided By Voices and Midlake, and deftly showcase this throughout this latest release. Things haven’t always been this way though, with their earlier material often drawing comparisons to the likes of Silver Jews, Modest Mouse and Sebadoh, all in all adding to a much scrappier and heavier sound in comparison to this more intricate and pastoral sound they’ve begun to adopt. The band have been noted for their live shows that switch between gentle intimacy and intense bursts of noise, and have shared bills with the likes of bar italia and Wednesday on their recent tours. They’ve also become a staple of Bristol festivals in the last year as well, with sets at Simple Things and Ritual Union gainering warm reception. LIFTER are Harry Fanshawe (vocals, guitar), Angus James (guitar, vocals), Chris Hicks (guitar), Miles Ward (bass),Anna Strudwick(cello) and Oli Cocup(drums).
SWELT:
Weaving tapestries of sparse, melancholic compositions, swelt meld influences of folk, slowcore and post-rock. The four-piece, composed of members of Talons, Repo Man and Iceman Furniss Quintet, formed in Bristol in 2020 and spent the next two years writing and playing intimate shows around the city.
Delicate melody and vulnerability form the core of the band’s atmospheric arrangements, using voices and strings to create open harmony.
Swelt’s debut release, ‘Red Mountain EP’ was released by Candlepin Records on the 28th October 2022
The release was followed up by a new single, 'My Only Reflection', released on 18th May 2023.
On 11th August 2023, swelt released their new single, 'I Thought This Winter Would Never End'. The band have played with artists such as Tara Clerkin Trio, Maita, Mi Mye, Peel Dream Magazine and Kiran Leonard, performing at venues including The Shacklewell Arms, The George Tavern, The Victoria, The Louisiana, The Establishment Wakefield and Dareshack for promoters including Bad Vibrations, 1% of One, Bodys and Gravy Train.
