As we celebrate Black History Month, it seems fitting to look at Negro Spirituals, the moving songs that grew out of blacks’ struggle for freedom during slavery. We will listen to and sing several of these songs and will explore some of the meanings behind their lyrics. A quintessentially American genre of music, spirituals represent many values of importance to us today, especially that songs can be both a comfort and an inspiration to act.Ginna Mashburn and members of our music program will lead the service.
