Join us for an exciting and interactive workshop with the talented artist, Miriam Shilling.

Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this workshop is perfect for anyone interested in exploring the human form through drawing. Miriam Shilling, a renowned artist known for her unique perspective and technique, will guide you through the fundamentals of life drawing in the fabulous facilities at the Basil Sellers Exhibition Centre.

During the workshop, you will learn various techniques to capture the essence and beauty of the human figure. Miriam will share her insights, tips, and tricks, helping you develop your skills and enhance your artistic abilities.

Participants will learn how to:

  • draw a live model in various poses
  • explore the fundamentals and techniques for accurate proportions
  • explore composition to create natural representation of the human body
  • discover their creativity with graphite pencil and charcoal.

This series of workshops is for those who:

  • have an interest in drawing
  • have limited experience in figure drawing
  • Anyone who thinks they can't draw
  • Anyone who has always wanted to draw
  • And those who want to take their drawing to the next level.

Participants can take home a series of life drawings using a variety of techniques in pencil and charcoal. No need to bring anything but yourself, all art supplies are provided. Enjoy coffee and tea as you learn the fundamentals of life drawing.

This 6 week course will run for two hours on a Monday evening, 5.00-7.00pm. Each workshop will explore different techniques and models, using pencils and charcoals. Do all, or select the workshop that interest you. Each week will begin with warm up lessons and then drawing a live model.

Spaces are limited, so make sure to secure your spot by registering in advance. We look forward to seeing you at the sessions.

Participants will learn how to:

Week One: Monday 24 February 2025. An introduction to drawing and the proportions of the body. Learning the fundamentals with a focus on line and form.

Week Two: Monday 3 March 2025. Using proportion and techniques like foreshortening to provide a natural drawing of the model. Introduction to charcoal techniques.

Week Three: Monday 10 March 2025. Using tone to describe the form and texture of the model to bring your drawing to life! Further exploration into charcoal and a variety of paper.

Week Four: Monday 17 March 2025. Working with different mediums and papers to enhance your creative masterpieces.

Week Five: Monday 24 March 2025. Studies in composition and gesturing to achieve natural poses in your drawings. Using composition to create drama and emotion in your drawings..

Week Six: Monday 31 March 2025. This workshop will focus on the full gamut of what has been practiced. Concentrating on the proportion of the body, bringing together all the other techniques learned over the course such as form, shape, line and tone.

These workshops are open to residents and visitors interested in immersing themselves in a fun and hands-on class, while learning artistic techniques taught by some of Eurobodalla’s most talented artists. No previous experience is necessary.


About the presenter

Miriam Shilling is an accomplished high school art teacher with 19 years experience. Her passion for art extends beyond the classroom as she maintains her own art making practice specialising in drawing, watercolour and ceramics. Her unique perspective on the human body and its relationship to the ocean adds an intriguing element to her work. Miriam’s expertise and dedication to teaching will inspire and empower you to explore your own artistic potential.
