In this in-person talk, Dr Licheng Qian discusses consumption and nostalgia in contemporary China.
About this Event

Amidst the sweeping social transformations, a nostalgia market has emerged in contemporary China, evoking a yearning for the past, particularly the Mao era. Why does this nostalgiaemerge? What does it mean to people of different generations? How does consumption contribute to the remembering and forgetting of the past? Based on interviews and participant observation, this research explores the relationship between consumption, nostalgia, and amnesia in the context of reform-era China.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Licheng Qian is an Assistant Lecturer in Sociology at Birmingham City University (BCU). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 2017. Prior to joining BCU in 2023, he worked as a tenure-track assistant professor at the University of Macau and Zhejiang University. His research interests include cultural sociology, political/historical sociology, and particularly social memory studies. His articles have appeared in both social science and China studies journals such as the Journal of Contemporary China, Nations and Nationalism, Cultural Sociology, and Memory Studies.
