Figure Humaine by Francis Poulenc headlines a program exploring war peace and freedom. Composed during the German occupation of France in World War II this unaccompanied choral masterpiece — set to the poetry of Paul Éluard — became a rallying cry for the French Resistance with its text even air-dropped by the Royal Air Force in 1943.
Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona nobis pacem written six years earlier offers a moving plea for peace in a world on the brink of war. Featuring strings piano percussion and the choir the program also highlights local soloists Laura Brandt and Adam Brousseau along with a new work by Quebec-based composer/conductor Robert Ingari.
