How we started
Liberated Lands was born out of a desire to abolish the current food system and teach people how to grow their own food.
Through my years of experience working on various farming projects across the state/country, I witnessed the exploitation of both farmworkers and the land within our current food system. The physical demands placed on these workers and the land are not reflected in the price of food; the system encourages consumers to ignore the harsh realities and injustices of food production.
When I realized that industrial agriculture was killing both people and the planet, I committed myself to sustainable farming in New York.
Where we’ve been
In 2022, I founded Liberated Lands, purchased raw land in rural New York’s Sullivan County in the Catskills, and began developing programs aligned with my identity as an Earth justice activist, artist, farmer, educator, and community organizer.
Since then, I am proud to share that we have grown quickly—thanks to the support of our enthusiastic community. The annual Liberated Lands Festival has evolved into a two-day overnight family camping event offering 100 participants astrology readings, tree planting, salad making, self-defense workshops and more.
Building on the success of the festival, in 2024, we published our first program schedule and hosted 32 programs across New York State to raise awareness of our mission and goals. These programs included high school after-school courses and Change for the Better, a dinner and discussion group for adults.
At Liberated Lands, we gather in gratitude to honor the land. We commit to giving more and wasting less as a way to respect each other and the earth that sustains us. We believe teaching people how to grow food is a form of liberation—both for the land and ourselves.
What’s next
The response from our community has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing a strong desire for more Liberated Lands programming. However, the key to every bountiful harvest is a disciplined planting season.
After an incredible year of growth, we have decided to focus 2025 on internal development. This means limiting our programming to strengthen the foundation of Liberated Lands by focusing on building a sustainable organizational structure and expanding our team in a responsible way.
The Liberated Lands Festival will return in 2026, but until then, you can continue to support us by donating money or resources, alerting us about opportunities for collaboration, and engaging with our digital platforms like Instagram and Substack (coming soon).
This is a fundraising event. All proceeds from our anniversary party will support Liberated Lands programing and building plans.
