Discover the true essence of Lavani with Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Shakuntalabai – learn, perform, and explore its rich traditions. Lavani is a powerful and expressive art form from Maharashtra, loved for its graceful movements, rhythmic energy, and deep connection with the audience. While Lavani's roots are grounded in storytelling, emotion, and performance, it has often been reduced to mere ‘item numbers’ in films, overshadowing its true depth and artistry. This workshop aims to bring the authentic essence of Lavani to the forefront, offering participants a rare opportunity to learn, engage, and experience its vibrant world under the guidance of veteran artist Shakuntalabai Nagarkar. Fondly known as Shakubai, she has been a trailblazer in the field for over five decades. She was honoured with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2008 and has mentored countless young performers in footwork, singing, and adakari (expressive performance). A member of the Bhatu Kolhati Samaj – a traditional community of dancers – Shakubai has led her own troupe for 35 years, performing across cities such as Pune, Solapur, and Belgaum. Facilitated by writer-director and subject expert Bhushan Korgaonkar, this workshop goes beyond choreography, offering an immersive exploration of Lavani’s many styles based on rhythm, rasa (emotion), and themes. Participants will also learn the Baithakichi Lavani style, a seated variation that emphasises expression and rhythm. In addition, the session includes discussions on the history and evolution of the art form, practical training in its diverse forms, and a final performance where participants will receive personalised feedback from the facilitators. Held in Hindi, Marathi, and English (with song translations), this workshop is open to dancers, actors, students, and enthusiasts of all genders. More than just a dance class, it offers an intimate exploration of Sangeet Bari, where Lavani continues to thrive as an art form deeply rooted in both tradition and personal expression.
