WINTER/SPRING 2026 SESSION: FEBRUARY 17 - MARCH 26 (6 WEEKS)

INTRO TO GUITAR

Welcome future guitar players! In this 6-week session you will learn all parts of this wonderful instrument, basic music theory, how to play 2-3 chords, a song melody/riff and hopefully a song or two. Fun is the goal!

This introductory course is designed to familiarize students with basic music theory to include note values, time signatures, rests, measures, repeats, and teach them to recognize and read basic chord charts for songs. As they begin to learn how to play this new instrument, students will be introduced to the practical skills of switching chords smoothly, reading guitar chord diagrams, and using different strumming patterns to 1-3 songs. Other fundamentals covered in this introductory course include:

  • Naming all parts of the guitar and learn its care requirements
  • Learning to play 3 chords and know how to switch evenly between them
  • Coordinating right and left hand playing techniques
  • Playing right hand muting techniques
  • Learning to play the Chromatic Scale
  • Learning to play in a group
  • Learning to read chord charts to apply to songs
  • Learning basic music theory/recognize music symbols/ note values
  • Developing listening skills through ear training
  • Beginning to play 1-3 songs

This weekly class is designed for students ages 9 to 18 with no prior guitar experience.

Intro to Guitar is taught by LHYAC Teaching Artist, Inez Woods (Mz. Inez). All classes have an adult support staff assistant in addition to the lead Teaching Artist to help ensure the best experience possible for everyone.

Students will meet twice weekly at the Lincoln Heights Youth Arts Center, in Room 205, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 pm - 4:50 pm.

Please Save the Date for the final date of class Wednesday, March 25, which will include an in-class demonstration as part of the Center’s Open House Week. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend this informal celebration marking your student's achievements!

Materials needed for class:

To participate, you will need to bring the following to each class:

  • All written music material will be provided by Mz. Inez/LHYAC
  • Guitars will be provided by LHYAC. If you choose to use your own, please let us know.
  • Picks and tuners will be provided by LHYAC for classroom use

Instruments provided for loan:

  • Yes

Instruments and equipment are provided by the LHYAC for classroom and at-home use, if applicable. We encourage all music students to exhibit the core value of taking care of your instrument as a demonstration of your appreciation for the arts.

The total tuition fee for this 6-week course is $33.

Registration Steps:

  1. Sign up: Reserve your child’s spot in your selected class(es) by completing the Registration form here on Eventbrite.
  2. Pay: The tuition payment of $33 total for this class session per student must be paid in person at the Lincoln Heights Youth Arts Center located at 2911 Altura St, Los Angeles, CA 90031 to complete your registration. Our main office is located on the 2nd floor.

Rolling Registration opens to the public on Monday, February 2, 2026 through Thursday, February 12, 2026 from 10 am - 4 pm in the main office.

We will also be holding an in-person Registration Assistance Event on Saturday, February 7, 2026 from 10 am - 12 pm at LHYAC for anyone who may need a little extra help or guidance with the registration process. This event is not mandatory, but we look forward to seeing you to answer any questions you may have in person!

Payments are accepted in person only at the Lincoln Heights Youth Art Center’s main office located on the 2nd floor via Cash, Check or Money Order made payable to "City of Los Angeles." Financial assistance is available. Please feel free to inquire about the Center's need-based Financial Assistance Program.
