About this Event

RHYTHMS OF RESISTANCE: GETTING TO KNOW THE AFRICAN DIASPORA THROUGH MUSIC AND DANCE

Whether you have never taken a dance class before, have always dreamed of taking a dance class, or have taken classes for many years, everyone is welcome here! In this class we will be learning about the foundation and certain techniques of various Afro – Caribbean styles. We will also be learning dance terminology and some history that we will be able to incorporate into our lessons week-by-week.

Class will always start with a warm-up, to get our bodies and brains ready to dance safely and prepare to learn. We will focus on different movement concepts and techniques of dance each class, building on the prior lessons, and will have the opportunity to practice those techniques within different dance styles. We will spend a majority of class time learning dance routines and dance combinations to teach students how to retain and memorize movement properly. We will also be using activities and games when suitable to explore movement.

By the end of this 3-week course, each student should be able to understand and demonstrate how to properly warm-up, describe and show the different dance techniques and vocabulary we have learned, and master the ability to learn and memorize a full dance routine at an introductory level.

Rhythms of Resistance is designed for students ages 11 and up. Adults and seniors are welcome!

This class is taught by LHYAC Teaching Artist, Ms. Nadia Calmet , and has a 10 student maximum capacity. All classes have an adult support staff assistant in addition to the lead Teaching Artist to help ensure the best experience possible for everyone.

We will meet once a week at the Lincoln Heights Youth Arts Center in the Auditorium on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
