About this Event
Saturday 14 December our Lewes Food Banks Christmas collection outside Aldi, Tesco, Waitrose.
All day collecting - but nobody does more than a single one hour 'shift'.
The latest figures from The Trussell Trust, a national network of food banks, reports that this Christmas a record 9.3 million people in the UK will be facing “hunger and hardship” including three million children.
The government has pledged to support people into work as a means of tackling poverty – but the majority (58%) of people facing hunger and hardship are from a family where someone is working.
Trussell estimates that if no action is taken, a further 425,000 people will be facing hunger and hardship by 2026. 40% will be children.
Of course we cannot reverse food poverty on this scale by one collection, however big, but this Christmas - traditionally our biggest food banks collection of the year - we can help ensure no household in our community goes hungry over the holiday season.
Through the day our collectors will provide shoppers with a shopping list of food items. Our request to shoppers is to add just one additional purchase from our list to their shop and donate to the stall we'll have outside the stores. Added together this amounts to one huge total.
Please register to collect for an hour on Saturday 14 December. Once registered we'll then be in touch with a rota. Click the 'get tickets' button to volunteer.
If you can't help please donate every pound donated will be used to fund the items Lewes Food Banks have told us they need this Christmas in the greatest number. Click the 'get tickets' button and choose 'donation' we'll then combine these items donors have helped pay for with our collection.
The all-day collection is distributed direct to the three Lewes food banks: Fitzjohns, Landport, Malling plus the Lewes Community Fridge and Ringmer Village food bank too.
