Join me for a fun and creative workshop for parents and children to explore the exciting sgraffito technique in oil pastels! This workshop is perfect for bonding with your child and provides a smooth and fun start to the school year. I will guide you through creating vibrant, textured artwork by scratching away dark oil pastels to reveal the colorful layers underneath.
You and your child will learn the sgraffito technique's fundamentals, where dark oil pastel is applied over colorful oil pastels or wax crayons and then scratched away to create beautiful patterns and designs. You will receive step-by-step instructions to help you and your child master this unique and enjoyable technique. You can choose to create individual drawings or collaborate on a single masterpiece together. All needed materials will be provided, including guides to scrape so you can experiment with various tools and materials to achieve different textures and effects, making each artwork unique.
Don't worry about your experience level—just bring your enthusiasm and imagination! This is a chance to create lasting memories with your child, and take home a beautiful piece of artwork that you both crafted.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Ilgi Toprak is a native of Istanbul living in Washington, DC. She is trained as an architect, with intensive art and sketching coursework. She views being creative as more than a pursuit but a way of life. That is why, in 2020, she created a piece of art every day and started the Instagram account Meadows & Skies. She finds joy in translating the everyday beauty of nature using oil pastels. Through her artwork on Meadows & Skies, she focuses on capturing fleeting moments like sunsets and sunrises. One of her sunrise drawings is featured in SHE:DC in 2024.
Ilgi is a design educator with ten years of university-level design teaching experience in Turkey and the Netherlands. She specializes in teaching architectural design studio and basic design courses that involve practical demonstrations of design techniques and concepts, hands-on experience and guidance in studio setting. She holds a Ph.D. in architecture and is currently a researcher in urban studies.
