Welcome to 'Let's Talk History' our series of talks produced in collaboration with Leigh Family History Society. Below you will find the details of our upcoming talks which will be held at Leigh Town Hall. Each event starts at 7pm.
Tuesday 17th September - 'Ladies of Leigh' by Julie McKiernan & Corrie Shelley
It is 1940 and neighbours and friends, Annie and Louie find the radio a welcome distraction from world events. But they wonder why more programmes are not dedicated to women and decide to create their own. A lighthearted introduction to four local ladies who made an impact in art, fashion and sport.
Tuesday 15th October - 'The Snowden Dunhill Gang' by Kath Graham
Join Kath Graham as she tells us about the life and times of the infamous Snowden Dunhill, a theif who terrorised the East Riding of Yorkshire in the early nineteenth century.
Tuesday 19th November - 'The Sufffragette Sleepover: The Life of Rose Hyland' by Dr Thomas McGrath
In April 1911, Rose Hyland , a wealthy widow in Manchester broke the law by refusing to sign the census. Her home that night became a safe haven for other women who decided that if their vote didn't count, then they shouldn't be counted either. Thomas will share more about the remarkable life of Rose Hyland and her campaign for women's rights.
