HEAVY GEAR: THE SETTING
Heavy Gear is about 4,000 years from now. In its distant past, mankind has discovered Faster-Than-Light travel and colonized several extra-solar systems, with Terra Nova having been the pride of the United Earth Government's colonies.
However, following Earth's total economic collapse a millennia ago in the game's history, all its colonies were abandoned and left to their own devices and ingenuity in order to survive.
Terra Nova's geography is primarily land, with all its water existing deep underground. The planet's single dominant land feature is the massive, mineral-rich, hot desert belt covering the entire equator.
This feature, called the Badlands, is determined not only the political make-up of Terra Nova (the vast majority of its populations reside in the more temperate regions closer to either pole and have formed countries, city states and coalitions under the flag of either "North" or "South"); but the badlands have also determined the nature of warfare on Terra Nova: the Heavy Gear.
Heavy Gears (which everyone calls simply "Gears") are 12-to-20 feet tall armored, single-occupancy military combat units. Though less heavily-armed and armoured than main battle tanks, Gears are extremely adept at operating in the broken terrain of the Badlands and are a mainstay of every army on Terra Nova.
HEAVY GEAR: THE GAME
This is a Canadian-made miniatures game, with rules that sit somewhere in complexity between classic Battletech and Warhammer 40,000. Heavy Gear brings not just robots to the table, but tanks, air support and regular infantry as well! Its turn structure is based around individual model activation, meaning that your plans can change at any time--and let you force those same kinds of changes on your opponent!
