The present-day city of Lafayette, IN came to be in part due to the foundations of the historic community of the Native American Wea village and the French Colonial trading post of Fort Ouiatenon. This historic community was a meeting place of two worlds and a center of trade and commerce. The Post of Ouaitenon handled large values of trade goods and lucrative furs for European markets. It was also a diplomatic link to Native Peoples and a strategic foot hold and claim for European empires like France in the 18th century. As such the post was many things, a community, a mission, an embassy and a military base.
Meet some of the inhabitants of the Military Post of Ouiatenon at this free living history event. French Soldiers and their support network of Female Auxiliaries, Civilian Militiamen, and Traders. See displays of a typical French soldier's gear, weapons and hear about what a day in the life was like for someone tasked to guard the trading post of Ouiatenon. See a demonstration of 18th century military tactics and musket fire and participate in a "French Colonial Militia Muster and Drill" at 11am and 2:30pm.
