Pinball tournament- Satan’s Pinball Tournament of Death, Halloween Devil’s Bonfire, Cooking Competition- Finger Foods- judged by The Grim Reaper, Costume contest- judged by Wilson from Home Improvement, my dog Harold, Gortlieb. The day after Halloween was always worse. They called it Satan’s Death Day, the day the devil decided it was his time to die, a decision only he can make and a gruesome day always. The history of this day will frighten even the bravest so I’ll only share a glimpse of what happened on one particular day in Lents, OR in 1973.
In Nathan’s backyard, the bonfire cracked and spat, sending sparks into the mist. Friends gathered for the annual Pinball and Finger Food Throwdown, flippers clacking, trays of wings, sliders, and deviled eggs steaming on folding tables. The air smelled like grease, smoke, and leftover fear.
Then came Harold, a mangy dog with one milky eye and a limp that didn’t slow him down. He slunk from the shadows, growling low as the pinball machine flashed and hummed. The silver ball began to move on its own spewing blood on the playfield. Are pinballs filled with blood? Where was it bleeding from?!
The fire dimmed. Someone screamed. A tray crashed to the ground. When the lights came back, the scoreboard read 666, and Harold was gone, leaving only pawprints and a half-eaten wing.
No one’s hosted a backyard tournament since. Not after Harold. Satan’s Death Day strikes again.
