About this Event

Poet, essayist, and translator Lena Khalaf Tuffaha—whom Fady Joudah calls "an under-the-radar genius"—presents her new poetry collection, Something About Living, which explores Palestinian life through the lens of American language, revealing a legacy of obfuscation and erasure.

ABOUT THE BOOK

What happens when language only permits ongoing disasters to be packaged neatly for consumption and subsequent disposal? Adrian Matejka, a finalist for the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize, writes: "Her poems interweave Palestine’s historic suffering, the challenges of living in this world full of violence and ill will, and the gentle delights we embrace to survive that violence.... In these poems Khalaf Tuffaha reminds us that love isn’t an idea; it is a radical act. Especially for those who, like this poet, travel through the world vigilantly, but steadfastly remain heart first." Tuffaha is the author of two previous books of poetry, Water & Salt (Red Hen Press) and Kaan and Her Sisters (Trio House Press). Her honors include the Washington State Book Award, the Robert Watson Literary Prize, and the Goldstein Prize for Poetry. Khalaf Tuffaha was the 2022 curator of the translation series Poems from Palestine at The Baffler magazine.
