Under the title “Personal Best for Leica”, the Leica Gallery Vienna presents selected works by the renowned Magnum photographer Elliott Erwitt. The selected 45 black and white photographs document Erwitt’s decades-long association with Leica.
His subtle, intelligent humour, which is reflected in many of his pictures, has become his unmistakable trademark. Erwitt’s works are direct and entertaining, sensitive and always pointed, American and cosmo?politan at the same time. In the course of his career, he has published more than 25 books and won many international awards.
The son of Russian emigrants, Elliott Erwitt was born in Paris in 1928 and grew up in Italy and France. He emigrated to America with his family in 1939. His interest in photography awoke when he lived in Hollywood as a teenager. In 1948, he began working as a professional photographer in New York and in 1953, at the invi?tation of Robert Capa, became a member of the Magnum Photos Agency, where he later on served as President. His achievements in the field of photography have made him one of the most famous photographers of our time.
