V roce 1979 se po deseti letech komplikovaného vývoje dočkal premiéry spektakulární a hvězdně obsazený válečný epos Francise Forda Coppoly. Z filmu podle scénáře Johna Miliuse, který zpracovává šílenství vietnamské války optikou románu Josepha Conrada Srdce temnoty, se stal jeden z nejuznávanějších milníků světové kinematografie.
Coppola o náročném natáčení, jež ho dohánělo až na pokraj příčetnosti a k pokusům o sebevraždu, trefně prohlásil, že Apokalypsa není pouze filmem o válce ve Vietnamu, ale přímo jejím produkčním ekvivalentem.
Příznačně sám tehdejší verzi uvedenou do kin nepovažoval za finální. Již na sklonku devadesátých let se ke svému mistrovskému počinu vrátil, aby ve spolupráci se střihačem Walterem Murchem vytvořil podobu odpovídající jeho původnímu záměru. Ačkoli v roce 2001 takto vznikla verze s podtitulem Redux, noční můra války nedala Coppolovi spát, a tak po 18 letech vytvořil definitivní sestřih.
Final Cut představuje legendární film coby tříhodinovou strhující a uhrančivou fresku, na níž se opulentní výjevy válečného chaosu snoubí s psychedelickými impresemi konfliktů uvnitř lidských duší.

After ten years of complicated production, Francis Ford Coppola’s spectacular war epic premiered in cinemas in 1979. Based on a screenplay by John Milius, which reflects the madness of the Vietnam War through the optic of Joseph Conrad’s novel The Heart of Darkness, the film turned out to be regarded as one of cinema’s essential milestones.
Coppola famously compared the exhausting production of the film to the war itself, stating that his film is not just about the Vietnam War, it was just like it. He never regarded the theatrical version of that time as the final one and therefore with the original editor Walter Murch he returned to his masterpiece at the end of the 90s to craft a version in line with his original vision.
Even though 2001 saw the release of the Redux version, Coppola was not able to shake the nightmares of war and 80 years later he returned to his masterpiece once more. The Final Cut version updates the legendary film to a three-hours-long thrilling and haunting vision, where lavish depictions of the chaos of war meet with psychedelic impressions of the inner conflicts within human souls.
