Legendary Diva: Margaret Rose Vendryes Memorial Exhibition

Earlier this year, Childs Gallery was deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Margaret Rose Vendryes: artist, historian, curator, scholar, and dear friend of the gallery. A planned show of Vendryes' works will open November 19, as a memorial exhibition celebrating her art and life. 

Legendary Diva showcases Vendryes’ prolific African Diva Project, a series of paintings and prints spanning nearly two decades. These works feature images of black women icons pulled from mass media such as album covers and print ads, with their faces obscured beneath traditional African masks. The Project interrogates concepts of gender, race, power, and the intersections thereof, longstanding interests of Vendryes as a multi-disciplinarian.
