George “Shorty” Snowden (1904–1982) was a pioneering African American swing dancer from Harlem and co-creator of the Lindy Hop. In a 1928 dance marathon, he and partner Mattie Purnell accidentally broke apart mid-dance—Snowden improvised solo footwork, the crowd went wild, and the iconic swing-out was born. He used his small size to his advantage with fast, comic footwork and signature moves like the “Shorty George”. He reigned as the top dancer in the Savoy Ballroom (with the title, “King of the Savoy”). Snowden helped launch Lindy Hop from Harlem’s ballrooms to a global dance movement. We’ll celebrate his legacy with a 2-hour workshop focused on recreating some of his iconic moves. Open to all levels, but not recommended for absolute beginners.
