Join us for an informative and thought-provoking talk designed to help you confidently guide your child through the challenges of the digital world. Left to Their Own Devices, presented by Holly Jean Brooker in collaboration with Makes Sense and Tricky Chats, offers practical tools and fresh insights for parents.
Holly Jean Brooker is a trained teacher, communications professional, and co-founder of Makes Sense. With a strong background in parenting education, she is dedicated to supporting families in the digital age. Holly is currently completing a Master of Public Policy, driven by her passion for building safer, smarter systems for the next generation.
Holly will cover:
The Online Landscape: Why and how young people are using tech including insights on screen time, gaming, YouTube and social media use.
Understanding Online Risks: The 4 C's: Content, Conduct, Contact, & Contract.
Practical Strategies: Filtering, house rules, whānau values, connection and conversation, unique needs of neurodiverse young people.
Scripts for Conversations: Take home age-appropriate, shame-free scripts to help you talk about difficult topics with your child.
Q&A Session: Your opportunity to ask questions.
This talk is grounded in research, support and real-life stories and will leave you feeling hopeful and empowered to manage the balance of technology with family life.
