About this Event
Join GSAS Dean Carlos J. Alonso and Columbia Global Reports Director Nicholas Lemann for a special reception and conversation to celebrate the publication of Left Adrift: What Happened to Liberal Politics by Timothy Shenk (’07CC; ’16PhD, History).
Shenk is an assistant professor of history at George Washington University and a senior editor at Dissent magazine. He will be joined in conversation by political journalist Scott McConnell (’75CC; ’87PhD, History), a founding editor of The American Conservative.

In Left Adrift, Shenk provides a new perspective on the transformation of the left over the past 50 years. On the eve of a major U.S. election, he sets out to show readers that the challenges facing American democracy today are part of a global pattern; that debates over identity, class, and coalition building that seem new today have in fact been around for decades; and that countries will always be divided, but that the division we orient politics around is up for grabs. In a democracy, no choice is more important.
Left Adrift is published by Columbia Global Reports, a non-profit publishing imprint, directed by renowned journalist Nicholas Lemann, that commissions authors to produce short but ambitious books of original thinking and on-site reporting from all over the world.
A Q&A and book signing will follow. Left Adrift will be for purchase at the event.
Complimentary drinks and light fare will be served.
