📚 Lecture: The Shipwreck That Shocked the Atlantic: The Andrea Doria
🎤 Speaker: Historian, Prof. Dan Breen
Built in 1952, the S.S. Andrea Doria was one of the fastest and most beautiful ocean liners afloat—the pride of post-war Italy and a virtual art gallery in herself, decorated with works by the country's finest artists and designers. Regarded as virtually unsinkable, the ship met a tragic fate on the night of July 25, 1956, off the coast of Nantucket.
In this captivating presentation, Prof. Dan Breen will recount the tale of the Andrea Doria, the last great shipwreck of the North Atlantic, and examine the implications of this disaster. Was it a lesson in human folly and arrogance? Or a testament to our ability to learn from our mistakes in the aftermath?
Prof. Dan Breen is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Legal Studies at Brandeis University, holding a doctorate in American History from Boston College. His scholarly interests include the Law of the Sea and the History of Boston and its Public Monuments.
