π Lecture: "The Colonial Gaze: Art, Power, and Erasure in the Museum"
π€ Speaker: Educator and Curator, Dr. Ilk Yasha
In this insightful talk, Dr. Ilk Yasha critically examines how museums have historically constructed and displayed representations of Black and Indigenous peoples through a colonial lens. This discussion will interrogate the role institutions have played in objectifying, distorting, and erasing these communities.
We will explore the lasting legacies of colonialism embedded in exhibition design, curatorial writing, and institutional narratives, revealing how museums have reinforced white supremacy, cultural hierarchy, and historical amnesia. Central to this conversation are the voices of Black and Indigenous communities that are actively challenging these entrenched systems.
Dr. Yasha will highlight how artists, curators, scholars, and activists are reclaiming narratives, repatriating stolen objects, and reshaping museums into spaces for truth-telling, healing, and accountability.
Donβt miss this opportunity to engage in critical conversations about representation and power in our cultural institutions!
