Join us for an enlightening evening with Chelsi Napoli as she reveals the surprising presence of marine mammals in and around New York City. While often overlooked, the waters off our beloved beaches are home to a remarkable number of whales, including humpbacks that visit our shores.
In this engaging lecture, Chelsi will discuss the different marine mammals that frequent New York waters, the reasons for their presence, and how to spot them from the shore. She’ll also share innovative methods scientists are using to study these majestic creatures, including the use of drones for monitoring whale health.
Chelsi Napoli is a Ph.D. candidate at Stony Brook University, focusing on humpback whale health in New York. With a background in science communication, she has worked with whale watches and conservation organizations, which have significantly influenced her research interests in urban ecology and marine mammal conservation.
