📚 Lecture: "The Spectral City: Horror Films and Gentrification"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Josh Lown
Join us for a captivating evening with Dr. Josh Lown as he explores the often-overlooked dimensions of gentrification through the lens of hauntology. While traditional discussions on gentrification frequently focus on material impacts, Dr. Lown will delve into the emotional and perceptual experiences of residents, such as feelings of belonging and alienation amidst forced neighborhood changes.
Using the concept of hauntology, he will illustrate the intricate relationships between personhood, place, and property in gentrifying communities. Discover how horror films—like Candyman, Poltergeist, The Black Tower, and Attack the Block—serve as compelling cultural narratives that reflect the haunting realities of gentrification's impact on our lives today and in the future. Drawing on his research and passion for horror cinema, Dr. Lown will provide a unique framework for understanding the lived experiences of those affected by urban transformation.
Dr. Josh Lown is a postdoctoral research fellow at Boston University's Initiative on Cities. He holds a Master's in Social Work from Michigan State University and a PhD from Boston College School of Social Work, where he studied community experiences of gentrification in East Boston.
