📚 Lecture: “The Chemistry and Craft of Books”
🎤 Speaker: Prof. Julian Silverman
What makes a book more than just words on a page? From ink and glue to paper and print, books are imbued with chemical, cultural, and creative significance. In this enlightening talk, Prof. Julian Silverman will explore the hidden science behind how books are made, revealing why they matter in our lives.
Combining history, materials science, and art, this lecture will illuminate the book as both a cultural artifact and a fascinating composition of chemicals and materials. Prof. Silverman is an Assistant Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology and a 2025 Research Fellow at the Center for Book Arts.
An avid reader of single-topic books like Cod and Salt, he is currently writing a book on soap. Despite his collaborations with librarians and archivists, he enjoys dog-earing his books. When not teaching, he loves reading the New York Times' Ethicist and Social Q sections.
Don't miss this opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of books with Prof. Silverman!
