🎙️ Lecture: Potions or Poisons? The Chemistry of Consumer Products
👨‍🏫 Speaker: Dr. Julian Silverman
Themes: scientific · consumer-focused · eye-opening
Science teaches us that the dose makes the poison—anything in excessive amounts can be hazardous. But in an age when most of our cosmetics, foods, and personal care products are made far from home, how can we trust what we encounter daily? This lecture explores the balance between safety and sustainability, diving into the chemistry and toxicology of everyday consumer products. From historical mishaps to the modern drugstore shelf, learn how to make more informed choices about what you put on and in your body.
Dr. Julian R. Silverman is an Assistant Professor at The Fashion Institute of Technology, a former Haas Fellow at the Science History Institute, and a module developer for the American Chemical Society’s Green Chemistry Institute. His research focuses on sustainable packaging solutions, and in his spare time, you can find him blocking supermarket aisles reading ingredient labels.
Don’t miss this chance to learn and connect in a relaxed, engaging atmosphere. 🍻
