🧠Lecture: "Does Joy Need Pain?"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Charlie Engelmann
Join us for an engaging evening as Dr. Charlie Engelmann explores a powerful question: Does joy actually require pain? Unlike common American ideas of happiness—often seen as the absence of negative emotion—joy is different. Joy can coexist with grief, disappointment, and discomfort, and may, in fact, depend on them.
Drawing from his dissertation research on joyfulness, Dr. Engelmann will examine how difficult emotions shape the appraisal mechanisms that allow joy to flourish. He will highlight the unique explanatory styles of joyful people and how these perspectives contribute to thriving, even amid life’s challenges.
Dr. Engelmann is the Associate Dean of Pepperdine University’s international programs. He teaches courses in economics, international studies, and thriving. He earned his PhD in Higher Education from Azusa Pacific University’s School of Behavioral Science, where his dissertation focused on the role of joyfulness in college student thriving.
Come rethink what it means to live joyfully—even when life is hard.
