Abstract: The lecture examines evidence for the rise of Christianity in Galilee, through the lens of the Jewish majority cities. Churches, recently exposed in Sepphoris and Tiberias, provide new insights into their development, including urban placement, patterns of financing, and the relative roles of imperial and local patronage. Comparative evidence from across the region suggests that initial efforts of church building often faced resistance from both Jewish and polytheistic communities as late as the late-fifth and sixth c. CE. To better understand this process, the talk explores church construction as a socially and economically motivated enterprise of urban elites.
