Peggy Chong, The Blind History Lady, will surprise you with her stories of real-life blind Coloradans who made history just by being themselves. Her in-depth research and articles create a clear insight into the strategies, techniques and tenacity that made our Colorado blind ancestors remarkable individuals. For almost 10 years, she has shared their stories through her monthly email list.
While salvaging water-damaged boxes in the basement of the Colorado Center for the Blind, Peggy found a treasure trove of original, single-source records that unearthed long-forgotten blind men and women who built a better life for themselves, their families, and their fellow blind. Thus began her ongoing research into the blind of Colorado.
Peggy’s lecture will describe how she researches “our blind ancestors.” She will bring to life their struggles and triumphs long before there were services, and support systems for the blind in our state.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
In 2016, Peggy Chong launched "The Blind History Lady" project. This project published thirteen books, detailing the lives of what she calls our "blind ancestors" who quietly made a difference in the lives of the blind of today. Each book highlights their struggles and triumphs as blind people and highlights the normality of their lives and how they were an integral part of their community.

Peggy's goal is to have the history of the average blind and disabled person taught to the blind, and to professionals where their jobs impact people with disabilities. Blind people historically held regular jobs and pursued professions occupied by people without disabilities, set examples for others to come. Understanding what the blind have achieved in the past and knowing the history of the contributions made by blind people to our country, our society will be more accepting of the disabled.
