Invasive alien species, such as the sea lamprey in the Great Lakes, pose significant threats to the health and biodiversity of ecosystems. Coupled with the growing global challenge of food insecurity, innovative solutions are crucial to managing these threats sustainably.
This lecture will delve into how AI and robotics, when combined with a deep understanding of fish biology and behavior, can revolutionize the way we manage and protect our aquatic resources. Discover how autonomous and human-assistive tools are being developed to enhance sustainable resource management and the effectiveness of aquaculture, paving the way for a more secure and biodiverse future in the Great Lakes region and beyond.
Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from experts leading the charge in the fight against invasive species and the development of sustainable fisheries. Whether you’re a conservation enthusiast, a tech aficionado, or simply curious about the future of our Great Lakes, this event promises to be both educational and inspiring.
This lecture is free, but registration is required. Donations are always happily accepted.

About the Speakers
Moira van Staaden, PhD, MOD
Moira van Staaden, PhD, MOD is a professor of biology and co-founder at Radmantis, a bluetech startup developing autonomous and human-assistive fish management for the protection of natural resources and improved food production via precision aquaculture. This work leverages over 20 years academic research experience in the behavioral neurosciences, and leadership in multiple STEM education initiatives, to drive research collaborations, commercial partnerships, and talent pipelines that advance technology, diversify the science workforce, and create public good.
Robert Huber, PhD, MBA
Robert Huber, PhD, MBA is a data scientist and entrepreneur at the interface of Computing and the Life Sciences. Robert is the technology lead for bluetech startup Radmantis, which reimagines the ancient art of fish farming with cutting-edge tools of AI and robotics. In addition to helping build sustainable aquaculture, our central imaging and animal management capabilities are being adapted to species-specific smart traps for population control of invasive species, visual assessment of underwater, biological communities, and automated field surveys of migratory salmon. Robert has contributed computational tools for high-throughput behavioral phenotyping at biotech CRO Juvatech, and blockchain-based solutions for data integrity and cybersecurity at Veridat.
