About this Event

This is an introduction to reading and interpretating Scottish documents from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries using records from the National Records of Scotland collections. We will look at the particular letter forms of Secretary Hand the script which most documents are written in, along with some common symbols and abbreviations.

Above is an image of a Secretary Hand document from the Exchequer records. This is an official account for fireworks celebrating the baptism of James VI at Stirling Castle between 19 November and 22 December 1566 and which will be used in the talk as an example. NRS catalogue reference E23/3 page 45.

The talk will be delivered by Jessica Evershed, Outreach and Learning Archivist at the National Records of Scotland. She is also co-tutor of the University of Edinburgh’s Lifelong Learning short course ‘Scottish Handwriting: 1500-1700’ which aims to teach palaeography skills for transcription and research purposes. This lecture is free for all to attend but booking is required.

Tea and coffee refreshments included with ticket.
