Join the History Society to celebrate Halloween with a lecture on Old Norse monsters!📅 Date: 30th October, 2025🕒 Time: 17:00-19:00📍 Location: NK11 (New King's)
Join the History Society for our upcoming lecture, Creature Features: Evoking Horror and Reading Monsters in the Medieval North, presented by PhD student Erin Benton.
What made Vikings and knights shudder? How do tales of fear, awe, and terror give us an insight into the cultures of the past? What can we learn from what goes bump in the night? There is no shortage of revenants, werewolves, trolls, haunted houses, and other monsters in medieval literature. This talk will share some of the most spine-tingling episodes of medieval horror in Old Norse literature, and discuss how we can use these to understand the emotions, bodies and cultural boundaries of the distant past.
This event is free and open to both members and non-members – no tickets required! After the lecture there will be an informal chat session where you’ll have the chance to ask questions and continue the discussion.
We look forward to seeing you there!
