The Past Can Be Changed - How RADWIMPS Drummer Satoshi Yamaguchi Reclaimed Music Through Neuroscience Research and Voice-Controlled Drums.

This lecture-performance focuses on the life lessons Satoshi Yamaguchi has learned through major turning points marked by both success and setback as a professional musician. Drawing on his personal journey, the talk explores how music, research, and technology became interconnected, leading to the emergence of new forms of creative expression.

Roy Hirabayashi (Co-founder San Jose Taiko)

PJ Hirabayashi (San Jose Taiko Artistic Director Emeritus)

Roy and PJ Hirabayashi, co-founder and artistic director emeritus of San Jose Taiko (SJT), celebrate over 52 years of playing taiko. For their years of community-building and expanding the art form of taiko through SJT, the National Endowment of the Arts awarded them the National Heritage Fellowship, the nation's highest honor in the folk and traditional arts, in 2011. Roy & PJ have also received the SV Creates Legacy Laureate and the San Jose Arts Commission's Cornerstone of the Arts award, and were recognized in 2014 with the JACL Japanese American of the Biennium award. In 2017, they performed at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C., and the Library of Congress Noontime Series, and remain active in performing, composing, and conducting workshops internationally. They are proud recipients of the 2024 Taproot Fellowship from the Alliance for California Traditional Arts.

Stanford Taiko

Founded in 1992 by Stanford undergraduate students Ann Ishimaru and Valerie Mi, Stanford Taiko is the university's Japanese American drumming ensemble of approximately 20 students with an all-original repertoire and the sponsorship of the Stanford Department of Music. Members are selected through a rigorous one-month audition process at the beginning of each academic year. The group performs regularly at major university events, and has gained international recognition through its program of regular touring.
