Lecoq Movement Technique
Physical Theatre Workshop
HOW DOES MOVEMENT CREATE MEANING BEFORE WORDS APPEAR?
This physical theatre workshop proposes a practical encounter with a movement technique developed by Jacques Lecoq, a French pedagogue whose research was rooted in observation of movement, natural dynamics, and the relationship between the body space, and rhythm. Lecoq’s work draws from sports, mime, physical education, and theatre, focusing on how movement precedes the word.
Participants will work with some of the Twenty Movement’s sequences developed by Lecoq’s. These movements function as precise tools to analyse how force, direction, and rhythm generate physical composition that can carry a meaning. Practised in a state of neutrality, they train the performer to suspend personal habits, allowing the movement itself to appear clearly and objectively.
Rather than expressive interpretation, the work focuses on accuracy, economy of movement, balance and imbalance, spatial relationships, articulation of movement and segmentation.
The workshop is open to performers from theatre, dance, and performance.
