In honor of National Leatherworking Day (!) we're pleased to present another opportunity to encounter the rich history and art of leatherworking.
On Friday, August 15, Master Cordwainer Brett Walker of the Fellowship of Arts & Mysteries will be teaching a private class entitled Leatherworking 201 at the County Museum.
This intermediate class is intended for those who've successfully completed Leatherworking 101, or have other sufficient experience.
Class topics include advanced stitching, specialty leathers, wet forming & sealing, intermediate knife skills, and much more.
The goal of the class is to provide participants with the skills and experience necessary to take on more complex leatherworking projects, as well as to take further advanced leatherworking classes which are offered by The Fellowship (e.g., shoemaking).
At the end of class, students and will have completed (or substantially completed) a reproduction of the original leather fire-bucket pictured above, which is dated ca. 1750-1790. Students can choose to leave the bucket unpainted, or can personalize their fire-buckets after class using oil paints and class-provided templates.
This experience includes twelve hours of instruction, beginning at 4:00 PM on Friday afternoon, and continuing until 8:00 p.m. that evening. Class resumes at 8:30 AM the following Saturday morning, and continues until 5:30 PM with a one-hour lunch break.
The cost of this class is $220 payable directly to the Fellowship of Arts & Mysteries, which includes materials and supplies. Attendance is limited to six participants ages 14+, and is offered on a first-come-first-served basis. Please note: no outside food or drink is permitted in the County Museum, but bottled water will be available.
