We're pleased to present another opportunity for our community to encounter the rich history and art of leatherworking.
On Saturday, October 11, Master Cordwainer Brett Walker of the Fellowship of Arts & Mysteries will be teaching a private class entitled Leatherworking 101 at the County Museum. This basic class, which covers shop safety, knife-working, sewing, and finishing, and has been taught at historic sites throughout the Eastern U.S. and the Midwest. Brett will share from his more than twenty-five years of experience as a traditionally-apprenticed cordwainer (viz., shoemaker), weaving in anecdotes of his successes and failures along the way.
Brett's treasury of experience and knowledge make the workshop a uniquely fulfilling experience that offers new and aspiring leather workers a tremendous and rare introduction to the storied craft.
At the day’s end, students will leave with the skills and experience necessary to take additional leatherworking classes being offered by The Fellowship of Arts & Mysteries, and will have completed (or substantially completed) a reproduction leather document case pictured above, which is based on an original owned by a shoemaker in the 1740s.
The cost of this class is $140 payable directly to the Fellowship of Arts & Mysteries, which includes materials and supplies. Attendance is limited to eight participants ages 14+, and is offered on a first-come-first-served basis. To register for this incredible class, go here: https://guildfellows.org/workshop/leatherworking-101-3/
There'll be a one hour lunch break around midday. Please note: no outside food or drink is permitted in the County Museum, but bottled water will be available.
For details, please contact the Fellowship of Arts & Mysteries at [email protected], or (757) 608-8120.
