Have you ever wanted to learn a new skill or do a new type of project but did not know where to begin? Then our September meeting will be of interest to you. Guild member John Champion has recently completed work on a pie crust tea table. In November, he will be showing this table and discussing details of construction and finishing at the local Society of American Period Furniture Makers (SAPFM) meeting. So, if you’re a member there, you’ll get a little sneak peek at part of the story during our September meeting. For our Guild, John has what I think is a very valuable presentation. When he set about taking on this project, there were aspects of the build that he had never done before. But the prospect of learning to carve on flat and curved surfaces, becoming a more proficient user of the lathe, and learning new complex joinery was a challenge that interested him. John will share the challenges he faced, what he had to learn, and how he progressed through the steps of research, planning, and ultimately executing a project that was new to him. He’ll bring in some sample components from the project as he was learning how to do things and show a few pictures of the finished project. If you’ve ever felt challenged about starting something new (who hasn’t?), I think this month’s meeting will be very valuable to you. We hope to see you there.
