Tutored sculpture class working in clay from a life model, class held at Bath Artists’ Studios

£200 includes all materials and three days of tuition

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Come along for three creative days of figurative sculpture in the School Room at Bath Artists’ Studios. Over three Sundays the model will hold one pose which will be enough time for you to complete a sculpture. You will be working in clay directly from a model, creating a life-like figure.

At the beginning you will be given tips to help with proportions and anatomy and you will be shown how to use callipers, take measurements and use plum lines. This range of techniques were used by the master sculptors and art academies of the past to more easily create a life-like sculpture and they will help you get the basics right.

Once you have sketched out your piece with the correct proportions you will be encouraged to look carefully at the model to observe contours, shapes, forms and angles and to find your own style of working and artistic expression. This will be a friendly class for all levels where you can learn at your own pace. This kind of sculpture can only be learnt through doing so you will get stuck in straight away. There will be guidance along the way. You will learn new techniques and tap into your own intuitive ability to sculpt what you see in clay. At the end you will hollow out your piece in preparation for firing. You can then have your sculpture fired by the sculpture school for an additional fee of £20.

Life sculpture offers a challenge and an immersive and therapeutic experience. Your mind will be relieved of its normal preocupations as you strugle to master this new skill. It is not as difficult as everyone thinks and you will produce a sculpture unique to you and in your own style.

We have a large and well equipped school room with sculpture stands and a place for your sculpture to be stored between sessions. Armatures, clay and tools will all be provided and the cost of the model is included. You just need to come along. In time you will build up your own set of tools

During the day we will take tea and lunch breaks together in the common room. Please bring a packed lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided.

This class will carry on throughout the year with two blocks of three Sundays each term. For each block there will be a new pose and these will vary from full figure in 1/4 scale working from a life model, life-sized portrait head of a clothed model, half figure in half life size and so on. As you progress there will be scope for you to choose the scale and size of your work. On the last day you will have the option to book onto the next course if you wish, a place will be reserved for you.

Bath Sculpture School has been running for 26 years with students going on to study at art college, complete masters, to exhibit their work and to have it cast in bronze. We welcome those who have been to art college, art students and those with no previous art background. Our community of figurative sculptors exchange ideas and put on group exhibitions from time to time. Those regularly attending classes will be able to join in our sculpture club days and to book in to use our sculpture or stone carving workshops if this is of interest.

Please email me if you have any queries about the course.

TUTORS: Sue Larner & Olga Fladmark

ABOUT THE TUTORS

Olga is a figurative sculptor living and working in Bath. From an artistic family, of Norwegian and English extraction, she grew up in Scotland and studied sculpture for five years at Edinburgh College of Art. She studied under figurative sculptor Vincent Butler, who had been taught in Italy by Marino Marini and Giacomo Manzu. She was fortunate to learn traditional techniques, working from the model, casting life-sized work in plaster and small pieces in bronze, then specialising in stone carving. Olga also paints, has a degree in Art History from Edinburgh University and has taught art workshops in schools. She teaches a Tuesday afternoon and evening class at Bath Artists Studios as well as some weekend workshops. She is keen to share her knowledge and encourage and inspire others to take up sculpture.
