About this Event

It's National Learn to Row Day! Meet at the Dover Community Trail by the Transportation Center for this special two-part event.

From 10 AM to 11 AM learn about how life on the water has changed from ancient times to modern in “Vikings, Shippin, and Rowing: From Ancient Norway to Modern Dover”. Special speakers include Local Author Linnea Hartsuyker who will speak about the history of viking ships and rowing; former Library Director Cathy Beaudoin who will discuss the history of Dover's waterfront; and a member of Great Bay Rowing who will share the history of the group in Dover.

Them from 11 AM to 2 PM join Great Bay Rowing for this FREE introduction to rowing. See examples of rowing techniques and get a chance to try rowing for yourself!

These events are part of Dover Reads, a city-wide initiative inviting community members to dive deeper into a shared book. This year's book is "The Half-Drowned King" by Dover author Linnea Hartsuyker.

"The Half-Drowned King" has been called “a vivid and gripping read” and “nothing short of mesmerizing” by bestselling authors Madeline Miller and Paula McLain. The first part of the Golden Wolf viking saga has also received a starred review from Booklist and Library Journal.

"The Half-Drowned King" tells the compelling story of the political intrigues, battles, and struggles for power that led to the rise of King Harald the Fair-Haired, first king of Norway, seen through the eyes of the young man who became his most trusted warrior and advisor. A must-read for fans of Game of Thrones, the Vikings TV series, and Outlander.
