Master the Japanese mending technique of sashiko with artist, Donna Lear.Throughout the day you will learn the basics of this ancient craft by employing the traditional Japanese method to create an entirely hand-sewn pair of sashiko coasters.
As part of the course you will craft your own sashiko thimble (an essential piece of equipment), develop the unique rhythm to sashiko stitching and learn how to create sashiko patterns of your own.
Donna will also guide you through the fascinating history of sashiko. From its birth hundreds of years ago as a basic necessity of life through to its place in Japanese culture as a recognised art form.
Whether you are interested in Japanese art and culture, or if you just want to experience sashiko, this is the perfect introduction.
You will also have the opportunity to sample genuine matcha tea prepared the traditional Japanese way and homemade mochi (Japanese sweet treats).
Sewn onto recycled denim you will be able to choose from a variety of colours for your sashiko and a selection of Japanese themed fabrics with which to back your coasters.
Sashiko is not as easy as it looks! But don’t worry, you are in good hands and can take the course at your own pace - in true Japanese fashion.
