About this Event

Leah Sohorta & Martin Leahy

'Leah seamlessly blends genres, relishing traditional uses of language play. Her deep, ethereal, vocals are crystal clear while her 'unique sound draws from both rural American and Irish landscapes, as well as folk traditions from both sides of the Atlantic. The result is a stunningly raw, genre-defying approach’'- Hot Press.

"Wow!" -Bruce MacGregror, Travelling Folk, BBC Scotland

'The single and album are decorated by her unusual, gospel-Americana tones, reminiscent of that genre's Rhiannon Giddens.’ - Paul Sexton PROG Magazine. ‘An artist of immense songwriting ability and talent’ - PJ Coogan, The Opinion Line 96fm.

Sohotra’s strong, humorous and honest style of storytelling radiates through eclectic melodies, which draw upon her American and Pakistani roots, her experience of living in Cork for over a decade and of being a single mother. She lends her voice to subjects of race, class, gender and sexuality. Her imagery draws heavily on nature, literature, folk tradition, nursery rhymes and poetry. Leah's subjects are often anthropomorphised animals, objects, and mythical creatures.

In 2019, Leah was invited to play musical support for legendary folk artist Andy Irvine. In January 2020 she launched her 10-song debut album, breaded crickets, which blends her powerful lyrics with the ingenuity of Martin Leahy, who plays over a dozen instruments on the LP. The album features gorgeous guest vocals by acclaimed songwriter Mick Flannery, who co-wrote the track 'Sam's Song’ and contributed backing vocals for ‘Grendel.’

Together with the musical talent of producer and multi-instrumentalist, Martin Leahy, the album ‘creates a moody aural landscape inspired by industrial punk, jazz, rock, Americana blues and folk’ - Hot Press.

MacBóchra

Is ionann 'seanchas' agus stair ársa, dlithe, traidisiúin, gineallach agus béaloideas na hÉireann. Is as an saibhreas so a fháisceann MacBóchra amhráin, ceol agus rince.

I measc ball MhacBóchra tá Brendan Duffin, amhránaí agus file Ultach, Brian Sheehan il-uirliseach, Gormfhlaith Ní Shíocháin Ní Bheoláin, ceoltóir, file agus rinceoir ar an sean-nós fé ghradam, agus Brian Leach an déantóir uirlisí agus an t-il-uirliseach:

"Is ón seanchaí is sine, an breac, an fiolar agus an fiach dubh, Fintan Mac Bóchra, a thagann ár n-ainm. Tuigeann ár mbanna an traidisiún ina fhórsa beo go gcuimhnítear air i bhfoirmeacha éagsúla... aistear a bhíonn le roinnt ag an lucht féachana."

The word seanchas in the Irish language refers to the ancient histories, laws, traditions, geneologies and lore of Ireland. It is this vast wealth of tradition and storytelling that MacBóchra shapes into new bilingual music, poetry and dance.

MacBóchra consists of Ulster born singer and file Brendan Duffin, multi-instrumentalist Brian Sheehan, award winning file, musician and sean nós dancer Gormfhlaith Ní Shíocháin Ní Bheoláin and instrument maker and multi-instrumentalist player Brian Leach:

''We take our name from the shape shifting salmon, eagle, hawk and oldest seanchaí Fintan mac Bóchra. Our band explores tradition as a force living on and remembered in different forms....a shared journey with our audience.''

After a busy year in the studio, and a year of building their reputation at live events including a residency at the Hazel Wood stage of Electric Picnic 2023, a set at the Cork Folk Festival and a showcase of songs for the Dept of Early and Medieval Irish at UCC, the band recently released on bandcamp their first EP ‘Inis Ealga Inis Fáil'. The EP takes its title from two old names for Ireland, The Noble Island and The Isle of Destiny, associated with the legendary Fir Bolg and Tuatha Dé Danann. They will release their next EP, entitled 'MacBóchra', this autumn.
